Introduction to System Performance
At NCI we believe that if you’re not measuring, you’re just guessing, and that is the foundation of our HVAC System Performance training. In this module you’ll be introduced to the basic principles, terms, and concepts of system performance. This is the starting point for five key goals NCI can help you achieve:
- Know which measurements to take (and how to take them)
- Recognize what test numbers to record
- Make a diagnosis from the results
- Recommend solutions from your diagnostics
- Repair and renovate systems based on those recommendations
Learn how incorporating these elements can take you above and beyond the standard service call.
System Temperature Measurement Basics
Accurate temperature measurement is one of the essential skills you’ll need to effectively test HVAC systems using NCI’s exclusive HeatMaxx and CoolMaxx procedures. For decades our industry has measured only equipment temperatures and believed that was enough information to diagnose system problems. But system temperature measurement is different and brings a new dimension to testing. Uncover the reasons why installing higher and higher AFUE and SEER equipment is not always the solution to energy efficiency.
Equipment Btu Measurement Fundamentals
In the Equipment Btu Measurement Fundamentals module you will learn about equipment-delivered Btus. You’ll get an understanding of how to calculate equipment total, sensible, and latent Btus. Using easy-to-understand formulas, you’ll calculate equipment-delivered Btus and compare with manufacturer’s equipment-rated Btus. Using the included Expanded Enthalpy Chart, you’ll discover how to manually calculate equipment enthalpy change.
System Btu Measurement Fundamentals
In the System Btu Measurement Fundamentals module you will take the next step in Btu measurement by learning about system-delivered Btus. You’ll calculate system total, sensible, and latent Btus. Using easy-to-understand formulas, you’ll calculate system-delivered Btus and compare with system-rated Btus. Once you are able to do this, you can easily determine how much of the system’s rated Btus are being delivered to the conditioned space. An Expanded Enthalpy Chart is also included with this module.
Static Pressure Budgets - External Coil
By completing this module you become familiar with how to read and understand static pressure budgets for HVAC systems with external cooling coils. You’ll learn how to apply static pressure budgets to system measurements and diagnose typical static pressure defects using budgets. Basic solutions to system static pressure defects are reviewed. Module includes downloadable NCI Diagnostic and Repair Procedure.
Static Pressure Budgets - Internal Coil
This module helps you become familiar with how to read and understand static pressure budgets for HVAC systems with internal cooling coils. You’ll learn how to apply static pressure budgets to system measurements and diagnose typical static pressure defects using budgets. Basic solutions to system static pressure defects are reviewed. Module includes downloadable NCI Diagnostic and Repair Procedure.
Completing a HeatMaxx™ Report
What if you could give your customer’s heating system an efficiency performance score, and back up its accuracy with sound testing data? With NCI’s exclusive HeatMaxx and CoolMaxx test reports you’ll have the ability to offer your customers an initial evaluation of how their heating system is performing in comparison to how it was designed to perform. In today’s energy and cost conscious environment, this can be just the right tool to set you apart from the ordinary service company. Learn to gather important test data, complete the report, and present the information so customers can understand that better system performance and efficiency is available to them.
Completing a CoolMaxx™ Report
What if you could give your customer’s heating system an efficiency performance score, and back up its accuracy with sound testing data? With NCI’s exclusive HeatMaxx and CoolMaxx test reports you’ll have the ability to offer your customers an initial evaluation of how their heating system is performing in comparison to how it was designed to perform. In today’s energy and cost conscious environment, this can be just the right tool to set you apart from the ordinary service company. Learn to gather important test data, complete the report, and present the information so customers can understand that better system performance and efficiency is available to them.
Calculating HSPS™
With NCI’s exclusive Heating System Performance Score (HSPS) method, you can easily score the performance of the entire HVAC system. Even when equipment is performing as designed, comparing field-measured delivered Btus to the manufacturer’s equipment rated Btus allows you to factor in the impact of the rest of the system on overall system performance. This module provides a step-by-step guide to gather required data and complete the HSPS report form.
Calculating CSPS™
With NCI’s exclusive Cooling System Performance Score (CSPS) method, you can easily score the performance of the entire HVAC system. Even when equipment is performing as designed, comparing field-measured delivered Btus to the manufacturer’s equipment rated Btus allows you to factor in the impact of the rest of the system on overall system performance. This module provides a step-by-step guide to gather required data and complete the CSPS report form.
