NCI Fundamentals 201 2 hours+
Once you’ve mastered the basics with 101, step up to NCI Fundamentals 201. These 10 modules will set you up to understand Btu measurement, how to calculate HSPS and CSPS, estimating R-Value, and much more.
Click on any of the module titles below to find out more about them:
Duct Traverses
The ability to traverse ducts is an important tool for accurately determining system airflow when you can’t use a balancing hood. In this module we learn to apply the basic traverse formula for both round and rectangular ducts.
Grille and Register Traverses
When airflow through grilles or registers cannot be measured using a balancing hood, they must be traversed in order to determine the amount of air moving through them. In this module we learn to apply the appropriate traverse formula, as well as how to create a correction factor in the field.
Supply Register and Return Grille Basics
The importance of selecting the right registers and grilles for system performance is often overlooked. In this module we’ll examine the characteristics of registers and grilles, and you’ll learn basic terminology. You’ll also learn more about interpreting published engineering data.
How To Select Supply Registers
The importance of selecting the right supply registers for best system performance is often overlooked. In this module we’ll examine the characteristics of supply registers and work through some selection examples. You’ll learn basic terminology and how to apply published engineering data.
How To Select Return Grilles
The importance of selecting the right return grilles for best system performance is often overlooked. In this module we’ll examine the characteristics of return grilles and work through some selection examples. You’ll learn basic terminology and how to apply published engineering data.
Sizing Filters
In this module, learn four easy steps to determine the size and number of filters required for proper function in an HVAC system. You’ll learn the difference in airflow through different types of filters, as well as how to check the impact on static pressure.
Estimating R-Value and Calculating Heat Loss or Gain
Sometime the heating or cooling comfort issues your customers are experiencing are not a result of HVAC equipment or system problems. In this module David Richardson shows you how to go beyond the system and diagnose problems by measuring insulation R-value. You’ll learn to calculate R-value using the included R-Value Estimation Chart. You’ll also learn how to determine heat loss or gain through any wall or other surface using the included Heat Loss/Heat Gain Estimation Chart. NCI’s exclusive R-Value Procedure is also included.
Building Pressure Fundamentals
In this module you will you learn about the effect of building pressure issues on comfort and efficiency. You’ll find out more about common, often invisible pressure problems HVAC professionals are often called upon to solve. You’ll also learn more about the elements of pressure, including infiltration, exfiltration, duct leakage, and more.
Basic Building Pressure Testing
In this module you’ll you learn about the goals of building pressure testing and some typical tests you can perform. You’ll find out more about base pressure testing, balanced pressures, and how building pressure tests are used in diagnostics. Common pressure and airflow issues are also discussed.
